neck pain treatment

upper cross syndrome

Upper Cross Syndrome describes a characteristic pattern of muscle imbalances which can frequent the workplace. As a consequence of these imbalances, patients may actually describe a range of symptoms such as mid back aching and stiffness, neck pain and restricted range of motion and headaches.

The characteristic pattern of imbalances includes the tightening and shortening of:

  • Pectoralis Minor and Major
  • Upper trapezius
  • Levator Scpulae
  • Sternocleidomastoid

And the weakening of :

  • The lower and Middle Trapezius
  • Serratus Anterior and Rhomboids

These changes in posture are often accentuated by work postures which emphasize a hunched over forward head position. As such, sufferers often report an increase in discomfort at work and relief with activity . With Upper Cross Syndrome, there will be changes and compensation in movement both elsewhere in the spine and possibly peripherally in the extremities which can result in further irritation and eventual symptoms such as Impingement syndrome and headaches.

How we can help

At our City of London Chiropractic Clinic, we frequently see patients presenting with this condition. Treatment is focused on relieving associated symptoms such as headaches, migraines, neck and shoulder girdle pain. This is addressed through a package of care including soft tissue work (massage), spinal manipulation and mobilisation.

Postural exercises will be prescribed to help strengthen up the muscles which are weaker along with stretches for the tightened muscles. In addition, all our chiropractors have recieved up to date training in Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessment and frequently advise work station ergonomics.

For further information regarding work station setup, please see the posture page. Alternatively, we will be running clinics to advise patients on posture.
